The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, is taking online applications for its M.Sc/M.Tech project of 06 to 09 months, the Jan 2027 session. Only students who are currently pursuing their Masters (MSc/MTech/MS) can apply. They need at least 55% marks or equivalent CGPA in all the examinations SSC onward and the email consent of an IITM scientist mentor. The last date of application is 22 November 2026.

About IITM Pune

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology is a research institute in Pune (Pune – 411008, as printed on the notice). For the Jan 2027 session it has listed scientists who are interested and available to take M.Sc/M.Tech project students. The selection is handled under the procedure of the institute’s Academic Cell.

Who Can Apply

• The M.Sc/M.Tech project (06 to 09 Months) at IITM, Pune is for those who are currently pursuing their Masters (MSc/MTech/MS).
• Candidates should have at least 55% marks or equivalent CGPA in all the examinations SSC onward.
• Candidates need email consent from an IITM scientist mentor. The mentor must state that he or she is ready to guide the student for the M.Sc/M.Tech project if the student is selected and allotted to him or her.
• Candidates should also arrange a letter of recommendation from the Head of the Department, on departmental letterhead, recommending the student for the M.Sc./MTech project at IITM.

The recommendation letter must name the IITM scientist mentor with whom the student wishes to do the project. It may be submitted along with the application. However, it is mandatory to submit it while joining IITM for the project work after selection. For the full eligibility conditions, see the official notification.

Choosing an IITM Scientist Mentor

Annexure A of the notice lists the IITM scientists available to take M.Sc/M.Tech project students (06 to 09 Months) for the Jan 2027 session. The list runs to serial number 109. It gives each scientist’s name, designation and area of research. Designations range from Scientist B to Scientist G, plus one DST Inspire Faculty.

The research areas named in the list include:

• Cloud microphysics and aerosol-cloud interaction
• Atmospheric chemistry and atmospheric electricity
• Monsoon variability and prediction
• Climate modelling and Earth system modelling
• Ocean modelling and ocean biogeochemistry
• Radar, satellite and lidar remote sensing
• Greenhouse gases, paleoclimatology and dendroclimatology
• Science communication and information management

Students can contact possible guides and hold discussions with them online. If the student and the guide mutually agree to work with each other, the guide gives consent to the student by email, and this email consent must be uploaded. Obtaining the consent of an IITM scientist mentor does not guarantee selection.

How to Apply for IITM Pune Recruitment 2026

1. Go through the list of IITM scientists in Annexure A before applying online.
2. Contact a possible guide and obtain email consent once both agree to work together.
3. Prepare a single PDF file, .pdf format only and at most 03 MB, containing the documents listed below.
4. Prepare a clear photograph in .jpg, .png or .gif format, with a maximum size of 100 KB.
5. Make sure the file names have no dot (period), except the dot that separates the file extension from the file name.
6. Fill up the online form and upload the files.
7. Preview the form in the popup window, make changes if any, and click the “submit” button at the end of the form. Your application is not submitted until you click “submit”, and no changes can be made after submission.
8. Check for an auto-generated email from [email protected] with an acknowledgment number. If it does not arrive, check the spam or junk folder.

Documents named in the notice

• Detailed resume or CV, including the area of interest
• Scanned copies of original or self-attested mark lists of SSC (10th standard) and HSC (12th standard)
• Mark lists of all years of the bachelor’s degree (BSc / BTech)
• All available mark lists of the master’s degree (MSc/MS/MTech)
• Email consent from the IITM scientist mentor
• Letter of recommendation from the Head of the Department (may be submitted with the application, mandatory at joining)
• Clear photograph (.jpg/.png/.gif, maximum 100 KB)

The acknowledgment email confirms that the application has been submitted along with both attached files. It also contains the filled-in form, but not the photo or the uploaded PDF. Do not reply to it, because it is auto-generated.

Selection and Interview

The selection process shall be based on merit, as per the procedure adopted by the Academic Cell. The names of the students selected for the M.Sc/M.Tech project will be displayed on the IITM website. Successful submission of the online application does not confirm selection.

Important Instructions

• Failure to submit any of the documents mentioned in point (2) of the notice (the CV and the mark lists) may lead to rejection of the application.
• If a candidate applies more than once, the most recent application will be considered for evaluation.
• Accommodation at the IITM Hostel may be allotted to only a few outstation candidates, based on the availability of rooms. This will be conveyed in the selection email.
• Accommodation will not be provided to local students, and the provision of accommodation is not guaranteed.
