Polish PM Donald Tusk begins three-day India visit

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk arrives in India today for an official visit from 21 to 23 October 2026, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is his second visit to India as Prime Minister (the first was in 2010) and, as reported, his first in 16 years.

Key details

• Talks: Modi and Tusk hold bilateral talks in New Delhi on 22 October, reviewing relations that were elevated to a Strategic Partnership during Modi’s visit to Poland in August 2024.
• Business forums: an India–Poland Business Forum in New Delhi on 22 October and in Bengaluru on 23 October (with IT and space sector stakeholders). Tusk is accompanied by Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domanski and a large business delegation; Poland is expected to push for defence exports and industrial cooperation.
• Agenda (MEA): trade and investment, defence, emerging technologies, renewable energy, education, culture and people-to-people ties; the visit is also meant to give momentum to India–EU engagement. The Ukraine war and West Asia are likely to feature.

Cabinet approves 78-day Diwali bonus for 11.4 lakh railway employees

At its meeting on 14 October, the Union Cabinet approved a productivity-linked bonus equal to 78 days’ wages for 11,40,770 non-gazetted railway employees, costing the Railways about Rs. 2,009 crore. The maximum payable per eligible employee is Rs. 17,951. The same meeting approved the continuation of the National Social Assistance Programme (renamed Pradhan Mantri Samajik Sahayata Yojana) and the strategic restructuring of IDBI Bank.

FSSAI acts against Zepto and three other firms

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) took action against quick-commerce platform Zepto and three other firms for food-safety and labelling violations (IANS, 19 October).

Rubio: India–US trade deal “about as close as you can be without having executed” it

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in Mumbai on 20 October, met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and said the two countries are “about as close as you can be without having executed the agreement”, with “a small number of items left to wrap up”. Jaishankar said they discussed trade, energy, technology and defence, along with regional developments.

• Trilateral: Jaishankar and Rubio also met UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan for a US–India–UAE trilateral on regional energy security, trade, technology and connectivity, at a time when the West Asia conflict has disrupted oil supplies and shipping. Rubio also highlighted India’s potential to process Venezuelan oil (as reported).
• Rubio travels to Jamnagar, home to Reliance’s large refinery, today (21 October). India has said its final US tariff rate should be similar to those of competing manufacturers such as Vietnam; the February framework cut the US tariff on most Indian goods to 18% from 50%.
• The talks follow President Trump’s 16 October executive order waiving key provisions of the Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act (tariffs of up to 100% on the top five importers of Russian energy).

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, representing India at the 25th SCO Council of Heads of Government meeting in Dushanbe, Tajikistan (19–20 October), announced on 20 October that India will host the first SCO Civilisational Dialogue Forum by the end of 2026, and invited all member countries to take part.

• The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation was established in 2001; India became a full member in 2017.

India women sweep Zimbabwe 3–0; Harmanpreet 91* and Shafali 69 in the decider

The Indian women’s team won the third and final T20I at Raipur on 20 October by 92 runs, completing a 3–0 series sweep in captain Smriti Mandhana’s first T20I series as full-time captain. India made 216/7 and bowled Zimbabwe out for 124/7.

• Harmanpreet Kaur scored an unbeaten 91 off 41 (ten fours, five sixes), her second-highest T20I score after 103 against New Zealand in 2018, and was Player of the Match. Shafali Verma made 69, her ninth fifty of the year, and finished the series with 128 runs.
• Nandani Sharma took 3/18. The win extended India’s T20I winning streak to 11 matches. Mandhana chose not to open, to give the middle order game time.
